Bio:

Nitro was an American glam hard rock / glam heavy metal band from Hollywood, California.Formed in 1988, the group originally featured vocalist Jim Gillette, guitarist Michael Angelo Batio, bassist T. J. Racer and drummer Bobby Rock. Nitro released its debut album O.F.R. in 1989, which reached number 140 on the US Billboard 200. Rock was replaced by K. C. Comet for the album's tour and Racer would leave the band thereafter. Nitro II: H.W.D.W.S., released in 1992, featured Ralph Carter on bass and Johnny Thunder on drums. The group broke up in 1993, with a number of previously unreleased demo recordings issued on the 1999 album Gunnin' for Glory. In late 2016, it was announced that Gillette and Batio had reformed the band, with Lamb of God drummer Chris Adler added to the group's lineup. Plans were made to record a third album – which would have been the band's first full-length studio album since 1992 – with Victor Wooten on bass and Kane Churko producing. Matt DeVries performed in place of Wooten at live shows. In 2017, "It Won't Die" was released as the lead single from the album. However, Batio announced in May 2019 that the band had once again split up, but added that some of the material from the abandoned third album would surface on his next solo release.

Album:

O.F.R. (Out-Fucking-Rageous) is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Nitro. Recorded at Front Page Productions in Costa Mesa, California, it was produced by the band's vocalist Jim Gillette and guitarist Michael Angelo Batio alongside engineer Charlie Watts and executive producer Bob Cahill. The album was released on May 30, 1989 by Rampage Records, a division of Rhino Entertainment, and peaked at number 140 on the US Billboard 200.Following the release of his debut solo album Proud to Be Loud the previous year, Gillette formed Nitro in 1988 with Angelo, bassist T. J. Racer (both of whom had performed on the release) and drummer Bobby Rock. All songwriting on O.F.R. is credited solely to Gillette and Angelo, although Racer claims that he also contributed. The album was supported by the release of "Freight Train" and "Long Way from Home" as singles with accompanying music videos.O.F.R. was recorded at Front Page Productions in Costa Mesa, California, with Nitro vocalist Jim Gillette and guitarist Michael Angelo Batio leading its production alongside engineer Charlie Watts and executive producer Bob Cahill.Gillette and Batio were also credited solely for the album's songwriting, although bassist T. J. Racer has claimed that he contributed to the writing without credit. In a promotional video for the band's third studio album, Gillette and Batio claimed that they had "never been happy with the sound" of O.F.R., blaming the lack of control the band had over the album's direction. The album was supported by two singles and music videos, for the songs "Freight Train" and "Long Way from Home", and promoted on a concert tour for which K. C. Comet replaced departed drummer Bobby Rock.O.F.R. was released on May 30, 1989 by Rampage Records, a division of Rhino Entertainment. The album debuted at number 164 on the US Billboard 200 for the week of August 12, 1989,before later peaking at number 140 and spending a total of nine weeks on the chart.AllMusic's Jason Ankeny claimed that the album serves primarily as "a showcase for Gillette's over the top vocal prowess", which he notes is most prominent on "a 32-second scream" and a passage "reaching an amplifier-exploding soprano high D note".Noisecreep's Carlos Ramirez included Gillette in a feature titled "Top 10 High-Pitched Metal Singers", highlighting his "penetrating" and "high-pitched attack" on lead single "Freight Train"."Machine Gunn Eddie" was later featured on the 2009 video game Brütal Legend.

This album completely fucking blew my mind when I heard it, and to this day, all 4 members of the band NITRO remain a MAJOR influence on my work as a musician, PARTICULARLY the vocals!!Jim Gillette has one of the most incredible metal voices in history, easily spanning well over 4 octaves and holding notes for as long as 30 seconds in some cases!! What you hear on this album is one of the most insanely impressive vocal performances of anyone in any band EVER.Gillette can shatter crystal glass with his voice, and he also possesses the unique ability to do something that no other metal singer has ever done before...sing 2 NOTES AT THE SAME TIME!!! This feat can be heard in in the monster track "Machine Gun Eddie", during the line "come take me higher". I've looked into this pretty deeply, and it's been confirmed. Yes, he really is singing 2 notes simultaneously. It's not just a publicity stunt.Perhaps even more outrageously and insanely awesome than the vocals is the lightning fast shredding of the neo-classically trained, quadruple-neck wielding freak of nature, Mr. Michael Angelo Batio. Easily one of the fastest metal guitar players alive, Batio shreds fast as lightning in every conceivable direction.Pounding away like an animal on the drums we have Mr. Bobby Rock, a professional studio rock drummer who was in the right place at the right time, and happened to be the perfect fit for this most hilarious and yet incredibly talented group. His drumbeats and fills are every bit as wild and crazy as the shredding and the constant high-pitched wailing.Lastly on bass there is T.J. Racer. On the version I got my hands on the bass was turned down way too low, but on the better quality versions you can hear his highly technical and tasteful bass lines that display talent nearly on par with Michael Angelo's guitar playing. What a incredible group of guys! The sound and style of the album is a mixture of glam, speed, and neoclassical. In a sense you could say this is the most extreme form of metal there is. Not in terms of heaviness, but definitely in terms of power, feeling, and volume. That is, this music was made for the purpose of being cranked as loud as you can imagine. When it's blasted through full power speakers with the settings mixed properly, it is a weapon of destruction that cannot be equaled by any other band in metal. There are some simple, straight forward heavy songs on the album like the opening track and "Nasty Reputation". They're full of fist pounding energy and power. Then there are the faster songs like "Machine Gun Eddie" and the closing song and title track, "O.F.R.", which stands for "out-fucking-rageous". O.F.R. may be the best and most definitive track here, and it completely kicks your ass and blows you away. One of the strongest songs here is "Fighting Mad", which has an outro that is absolutely mind blowing. The whole band just completely lets loose and goes balls to the wall, as the singing rises chromatically, note by note, and with each raise in pitch, the power and grows stronger and stronger. It's the type of thing that brings your fucking soul alive. If you're looking to hear the most extreme and over the top metal in all existence, then look no further, for this album has it all.
