Bio:

Solution .45 is a metal supergroup from Sweden, created by guitarist Jani Stefanovic (Miseration, Divinefire, Essence of Sorrow). Their current lineup includes vocalist Christian Älvestam (Miseration, ex-Scar Symmetry), guitarists Stefanovic and Patrik Gardberg (Torchbearer, The Few Against Many, Ammotrack), and drummer Rolf Pilve (Miseration, Essence of Sorrow, Stratovarius). In late 2007 Jani Stefanovic formed Solution .45, with Christian Älvestam (who had left Scar Symmetry in 2008) joining as one of its last members. Jani stresses that despite Christian's presence in the band, it will not be a Scar Symmetry clone and that songs had been ready for some time before his arrival. In the fall of 2008 an 8-track demo was produced by Tomas "Plec" Johansson (Unmoored, Scar Symmetry), with a demo track titled "Clandestinity Now" available over the internet.Solution .45 entered Panic Room Studios in September 2009 to record its first full-length album For Aeons Past, with Dark Tranquillity vocalist Mikael Stanne writing lyrics for the majority of the album. The record was finished and mastered in December 2009,and was issued by AFM records in Europe and Marquee/Avalon in Japan; released on 9 April 2010 in Europe, and May 11 in North America. On 23 January 2010, it was announced that the band was parting ways with keyboardist Mikko Härkin. Mikko still contributed keyboards to the record, but he is regarded as a guest musician on the album, rather than a permanent band member.Furthermore, it was announced on 29 May 2010 that Jani Stefanovic was leaving the band amicably, and Patrik Gardberg (from Torchbearer, The Few Against Many, and Ammotrack) would be his replacement. The band still wishes to involve Jani in future work, including future albums.By 25 August 2010, Solution .45 had released a music video for "Gravitational Lensing".The video for "Lethean Tears" was initially set to launch in late 2010, but for undisclosed reasons, it was canceled. Latest news from Christian Älvestam, indicates that the production of the video was resumed in early February 2011, and the video should be released later in 2011. The video for "Lethean Tears" was released on 30 July 2011.On 11 August 2011, it was announced that Stefanovic had returned to the band, which would now feature three guitarists (Stefanovic, Gardiner, and Gardberg). It has since been announced that Anders Edlund, the groups bassist, has departed from the group on mutual terms. As of mid-2014, the group is working on their second and third studio albums. On 9 July 2014, the band announced that Tom Gardiner had left the band.On August 31st 2015, on the official facebook page, the band announced November 20th 2015 as the release date of Part 1 of their new album, which will be released worldwide through vinyl, CD and most digital platforms. The album was later titled Nightmares In The Waking State: Part I. Following the release of Part I, the band announced that Nightmares in the Waking State: Part II will be released in 2016.

Album:

SOLUTION .45 is a side project made up from musicians who are or were currently in bands SCAR SYMMETRY, MISERATION, SONATA ARCTICA and STATOVARIUS. The band released their debut album in 2010, with guest musicians Mikka Haarkin (ex-SONATA ARCTICA) and with Mikael Stanne (DARK TRANQULITY) providing the lyrics. Following some line-up changes over the past five years, the band presents their second full-length album here which contains ten tracks.“Wanderer from the Fold kicks off the album. It has a fast paced, get-up-and-go sound, and an almost futuristic quality to the balls-out chorus. If I didn’t know any better, I might mistake the song for a track from SOILWORK. There are also some nifty key changes and lightning fretwork from the lead guitar. The clean vocals in “Protecting the Void” are just sublime, and are in sharp contrast from the overall brutality of the remainder of the sound. The diversity of the vocals is also duly noted. Adding in some acoustical complexities and more subdued harmonic singing in “Bleed Heavens Dry,” the track also features a really strong chorus that seems to beam light straight into the dark skies above. “Where Losing is All” could go either way in terms of anger or pensive introspection, and it seems to encompass both. Once again the vocal harmonies are the highlight of the song in my opinion.“In Moments of Despair” is the breezy, ethereal song on the album, akin to “Lethean Tears” from their first solo outing. The subtle use of piano augments the emotional passages marked again by the beauty of the voice of Christian Alvestan. When the electric guitars, bass and drums hit the ground together, the magnitude of the moment could be heard on another world. It’s almost enough to reduce you to tears. “Targeting Blaze” is another undeniable winner, alternating between warm, playful melodies, and the crushing inevitability of death. You can listen to this with an enormous smile while pounding your fists and feet at the same time. Artfully alternating the method of impact that the album delivers to you is the song “Alter the Unbearable State of Nothing,” which features spacy, zippy sounding keyboards over a spiked bed of uncompromising Death Metal. This song is like an oversized asteroid beaming towards Earth, bouncing and knocking off of everything in its path without wavering in speed or force.Closing the album is the over-eleven minute closer “Nemesis.” What a solidifying and all-encompassing way to display the bevy of sounds and techniques that they have on masterpiece of an album. It has a slow, grinding intensity and a well of darkness that knows no depth. You can definitely sense growth in the band from the line-up changes and additional time together to compose since their first album. Though there is plenty of heavy, bottom end meatiness and Death Metal punch, I find the moments of beauty, harmony, emotion and soul-bearing vocals to be the best part of this cornucopia of auditory bliss. If they made this their full time gig, all the other bands in this style just got put on notice.

Album:

It has been five long years since Solution .45’s debut album (2010’s excellent For Aeons Past), but the Swedish Melodic/Progressive/Death Metal band finally gave us a follow-up late last year with Nightmares in the Waking State – Part I. As you might guess from the title, this is the first part of a two-album set, the latter of which is scheduled for release later this year.Solution .45, of course, is the product of former Scar Symmetry vocalist Christian Alvestam, his Miseration bandmate Jani Stefanovic and former Miseration drummer Rolf Pilve. This time around they’re joined by second guitarist Patrik Gardberg (of Torchbearer). As with the first Solution .45 album, comparisons to Alvestam’s former band are inevitable. Even more so now that Scar Symmetry has released the first of a multi-album epic of their own. And yes, Solution .45 does have a strong resemblance to Scar Symmetry, as well as Soilwork and Mercenary. Alvestam switches between clean and growled vocals with ease, and sounds fantastic at both styles. The most noticeable difference between For Aeons Past and Nightmares in the Waking State – Part I is that this new album, while still very catchy and melodic, has more progressive and atmospheric elements and feels much more layered and epic. And not just in a “wow, there’s an 11-minute song” kind of way. Even the shorter, fiercer songs seem part of a grander whole. This is a big album, and the fact that it’s only half of the full experience is almost frightening.Alvestam and company may have kept fans waiting a long time, but Nightmares in the Waking State – Part I is well worth the wait. Solution .45 has definitely taken their sound to another level with this release, and it will be very interesting to hear Part II. If you liked the Solution .45 debut, or bands like Scar Symmetry, Mercenary and Into Eternity that have multiple vocal styles, Nightmares in the Waking State – Part I is well worth hearing.
